Back-to-School Is The Perfect Time to Organize & Declutter Your Home for Fall.

Insights and tips from Neat It, Toronto's Decluttering and Home Organization Experts.

As summer days gradually give way to cooler evenings and the kids head back to school, we are reminded that fall is just around the corner, bringing with it a busy period filled with new routines and holiday preparations in upcoming months, making back-to-school season the perfect time to prepare your home for the fall and tidy up before the weather turns completely.

In this blog, I’ll share some of my top tips on how to transition your home from summer to fall seamlessly. Whether you’ve worked with Neat It before or simply looking for ways to keep your space in top shape, these insights are designed to help you reclaim your home’s harmony as we step into autumn.

Why Back-to-School is the Best Time to Organize?

The back-to-school period represents a fresh start. Just as our children return to their academic routines, it's a great opportunity for you to reset and rejuvenate your home after the laid-back days of summer. With the kids out of the house for most of the day and everyone adjusting to new schedules, this is an ideal moment to reevaluate your spaces, declutter, and create an environment that supports your family's needs for the upcoming months.

1. Declutter Summer Gear

Start by tackling summer-specific items that are no longer in use. Beach toys, pool floats, gardening tools, and summer clothes can all be packed away or donated if they won’t be needed until next year. Take this time to assess what you used frequently and what simply took up space. By decluttering these items now, you’ll free up valuable storage space and prevent the stress of dealing with out-of-season items when fall is in full swing.

At Neat It, we often suggest investing in clear, labeled storage bins to keep your seasonal items organized and easy to find when the warm weather rolls around again. Remember, a well-organized storage area will save you time and hassle in the future.

2. Create an Efficient Entryway

As the school year begins, your entryway and mudroom will likely become a high-traffic area. This space can easily become cluttered with backpacks, shoes, coats, and umbrellas. To avoid the morning rush turning into a chaotic scramble. Setting up an efficient, organized entryway will help you remove that morning stress. Install hooks at child-friendly heights for coats and backpacks, designate a spot for shoes, and add a bench with storage underneath for smaller items like hats and gloves.

An organized entryway not only streamlines your morning routine but also sets a positive tone for your day as you walk out the door.

3. Revamp Homework Stations

With the kids returning to school, it’s important to create a dedicated, distraction-free space where they can focus on homework. This could be a desk in their bedroom, a corner in the living room, or a shared family office. Equip the space with all the necessary supplies—pencils, notebooks, calculators, and a comfortable chair—so that everything is within easy reach.

Keep in mind that a clutter-free environment is essential for concentration. Encourage your children to tidy up their homework stations at the end of each day. Regularly decluttering these areas can significantly boost their productivity and help them maintain focus on their studies.

4. Prepare Your Kitchen for Fall Cooking

As the weather cools down, you may find yourself spending more time in the kitchen preparing hearty meals and baking seasonal treats. Now is a great time to organize your pantry, fridge, and kitchen cabinets. Begin by clearing out expired or seldom-used items, and reorganize the shelves so that the ingredients you use most frequently are easily accessible.

If you love cooking with seasonal produce, consider setting aside a section of your pantry for fall staples like canned pumpkin, spices, and baking supplies. A well-organized kitchen will not only make meal prep more enjoyable but will also inspire you to embrace fall’s culinary delights.

5. Adjust Closets for Cooler Weather

With the change in seasons, it’s time to swap out summer clothes for warmer fall attire. Go through your family’s wardrobes and assess what can be stored away, donated, or repurposed. This is also a good opportunity to take stock of fall and winter essentials such as coats, boots, and scarves.

6. Plan for The Holidays

Fall marks the beginning of the holiday season, with Thanksgiving, Halloween and Sukkot just around the corner, feeling overwhelmed by holiday preparations is totally normal. Take inventory of your holiday décor and assess what you have before buying new items. Store everything in labeled bins for easy access when it’s time to decorate.

By organizing your home now, you’ll be well-prepared to host gatherings, decorate, and show off your neat home enjoying these festivities without the stress of last-minute preparations.
